Food has a way of bringing people together and sometimes it can create opportunities to build confidence and develop practical skills.
That’s why our teams at Fooditude were pleased to welcome Global Generation back to our kitchen for another hands-on skills workshop. The session brought together six young people into the Fooditude kitchen, where they spent time working together and learning new skills.

Learning in the kitchen
Our Executive Chef Alex Bailey led the session, helping the group develop their knife skills and learn how to prepare a variety of vegetables.
Everyone had the chance to get involved and practise for themselves, learning from an experienced chef and getting more comfortable working with fresh ingredients.
The group also brought fresh produce from the Paper Garden in Canada Water, one of Global Generation’s community garden sites. They used the vegetables to make a salad together, putting their new skills into practice and creating a shared meal they could enjoy together.
About Global Generation
Founded in 2004, Global Generation is an educational charity that works with children and young people, families, businesses and local communities across London.
Its work connects people with nature in the middle of the city and gives children and young people practical opportunities to build confidence and get involved in their communities.
The Paper Garden in Canada Water is one of its community garden sites. It includes the Classroom, a large circular-design build, and provides a space where people can learn, grow and spend time together.
Food and community
Working with organisations in our local community is an important part of our approach to impact.
Our Impact strategy includes Community and Connection, with work centred around sharing food through our community kitchen, giving our people opportunities to volunteer and working with community partners. Global Generation is one of those partners and workshops like these give our chefs and the wider team the opportunity to share their skills outside the usual workplace kitchen. The session provided an opportunity for young people to learn something practical in a professional setting.

From the Paper Garden to the plate
Bringing the Paper Garden produce into the Fooditude kitchen added another part to the session.
The group could see the ingredients they had brought with them go from fresh produce to a finished dish, learning how to prepare them along the way.
It also connects with Fooditude’s wider environmental work. Our Impact strategy includes reducing food waste and increasing the number of low-carbon dishes we serve, alongside our work with community partners.
The session offered a hands-on way to think about food, from the ingredients we use to what we do with them.
Opening our kitchen to community partners gives us a chance to share those skills in a different setting. For the young people taking part, it meant learning from a professional chef and getting practical experience. For our team, it meant spending time with a group who were keen to learn.
Looking forward to the next workshop
Our team really enjoyed welcoming Global Generation back to the Fooditude kitchen.
The session brought together food, practical skills and teamwork, with the group leaving with some new kitchen skills and gathering round a table to share a meal prepared together.
We’re looking forward to welcoming the group back and seeing where the next workshop takes us.
